Christmas Far Too Commercialized

As I drive to Surrey on the way to my best friend’s house, I am amazed by the bright lights and Christmas decorations I see on buildings trees, fences, and people’s homes. It is wonderful to see adults and kids getting excited about the season. Many are expecting gifts on Christmas day and I am sure some will be disappointed about what they receive. None the less what began concerning me was whether Christmas has become just another commercialised national celebration.

When did we lose the ability to draw?

As a child, I spent much of my time drawing. I love drawing. I’d sit there – we’d all sit there – happily drawing away to our hearts'contents. We drew everything we saw and all kinds of things that we could only imagine. Back then our minds were fertile with inspiration and all kinds of fantastical inventions: anything was possible.

Then, sometime during our later childhood, the puberty bomb landed, exploding and infecting every single boy and girl with different desires. Suddenly, drawing went out of the window and instead we all played kiss chase of sat in the corner and moped (after grazing our knee playing kiss chase on that ultra-hard gravel that you only found in playgrounds in schools the world over).

He was quick to dismiss them, saying that they weren’t any good, but my uncle always was too modest…

Why movie re-makes are actually a fine thing

Ask almost anyone what they think and feel about movie re-makes and you’re bound to find they have an opinion – regardless of whether they actually watch a lot of movies or not. Why is this? Well, maybe it’s because nobody likes the idea of something being tarnished. And I can understand that. Us human-beings are very protective of things which we think are good. The last thing we want is for them to be ruined.

Now, taking this into account, I am going to put forward what I believe is a strong argument for the case of re-makes.

Re-makes are essential for one main reason (and lots more besides; if we can I will cover those soon after): new generations of movie lovers have every right to key into the same fascinating plots as we are right now. Personally I love the idea of Indiana Jones still being around in a thousand years. I love the notion that something can keep its essence but constantly change and update itself.

if you don’t want to have the original version messed up in your memory, DON’T GO AND SEE THE RE-MAKE

What’s wrong with that?

I suppose what’s wrong with that is this: while the re-makes are intended for a new audience, and a new audience does indeed see them, the old audience also gets to see them too…and this puts a taint on it. My advice is this: if you don’t want to have the original version messed up in your memory, DON’T GO AND SEE THE RE-MAKE.

But that’s easier said than done, of course; most of us are highly protective about certain films, and we see it as our right to go and defend that film and judge it against its original.

Another way to think of re-makes is as illustrated in the following example: let’s say Gary is an appalling painter. He loves are and is undergoing art tuition at his local college, but he needs MORE somehow. So he arranges for a private art teacher to come round and knock some sense into his tired old pathetically un-creative mind.

When she turns up, although the tuition is great, Gary can’t help but feel that he hankers over the old class. This makes no sense, really, as Gary never produced anything of any worth there – quite the opposite, in fact – but it is the way it is. And this is how re-makes are. Even when you have a great experience, you can’t help but think of the original – whether the original was any good or a total heap of junk.

Should mobile phones be banned on trains?

I live in a village. It contains a playing field, some 1980s play equipment rarely used by children, and people of various ages living side by side in happy village unison. The village is near a town but it’s still very much a village, so all the usual village-ey rules apply. One such rule is that technology is bad. Another is PLEASE PICK UP YOUR DOG’S MESS IF IT DOES A DOO-DOO ON THE STREET! (This was written on a badly designed sign which screamed of old-age bitter frustration.) Another rule, as I recently overheard when walking behind Mr and Mrs Telings of Beu Street is this one: mobile phone devices should be banned on train.

Frankly, Mr and Mrs Telings might be well-respected in the village for their cosmopolitan views, but that’s not to say that this opinion isn’t total gibberish! (And yes, for my own safety and to make sure that my house doesn’t get petrol-bombed, I have changed their name here. So would you if you saw how Mrs Telings can throw daggers with her eyes!)

this is more about the issues people have with technology than anything to do with anti-social behaviour

What they fail to understand, you see – and this goes for everyone who thinks mobiles should be banned from trains and other places where crowds of people gather – is that talking on a mobile is completely normal and really shouldn’t be frustrating. Another question I will one day bring up with the Telings couple – in the nicest most politest possible way, as is only safe and sensible – is this: how is talking on a mobile any different than talking to someone in real life who is sitting right next to you? It isn’t really, is it? No, see? When you think about it it’s completely and utterly ridiculous. As ludicrous as hybrid cars uk becoming the norm when it’s much more fun to drive a petrol-guzzling beauty.

Don’t get me wrong, I can see their problem: the invasion of privacy and the fact that this alien voice is intruding on the train’s peaceful, serene nature. But really, if you ask me this is more about the issues people have with technology than anything to do with anti-social behaviour. The sooner we all accept that, the better.

Not that I shall be telling either Mr and Mrs Telings my opinion on this subject any time soon. No…both of them have formidable arguing skills and you’d be foolish to go down that route…

Talking in the cinema however…now THAT’S something to get angry about…

Mobile…Cell…Loss of Privacy?

Mobile...Cell...Loss of Privacy?

Mobile phones, cell phones, handheld devices…whatever you want to call them they’ve become so interconnected with humanity that it is hard to imagine a time without them.

I was browsing through a mobile store the other day as my old Nokia had finally died and gone to the great mobile heaven in the sky. I’ve been resistant to continually upgrading my phone as it seems that whenever I do my privacy becomes more and more distant. Information I read on Read the rest of this entry »

Why Are We Scared?

Last night I found myself in a massive panic when I left my bedroom for the bathroom. No sooner had I opened the door when my eyes caught sight of a tremendous shadowy claw moving along the wall. I didn’t freeze, because this fear was worse than a fear that has that effect: I did a small, very un-manly jump, and I bolted like a terrified horse into the safety of the kitchen.

“It’s a spider, what’s wrong with you?” Read the rest of this entry »

Is Horror The Most Popular Thing?

People who love horror movies are a strange phenomenon: you often hear people saying they know someone who really loves horror, a friend of a friend, but rarely do you come across a hardcore horror film addict who is willing to stand his or her ground at a party and admit to liking a film which everyone else there thinks is nothing but sick. Battle Field LA

Watched this movie yesterday, it wasn’t bad it could have be more crisp but I truly enjoyed myself. Don’t worry I’m not going to reveal any spoilers but I want to bring some thought on sci-fi and outer world for the moment cause I feel like doing so.
The outer universe is made out of millions and millions of galaxies and stars and solar system - who knows there might be trillions. Its weird to imagine that in this extremely Read the rest of this entry »

Whats in the food you eat?

A very simple answer to a very simple question - crap! Lot of people are stuck in a vicious cycle of crap food and crap drinks. What exactly comes under this brand?
